STARS Multi Purpose

STARS Multi-Purpose Co-operative of Castle Bruce, was formed in November 2008, but officially registered in May 2009. The Co-operative's motto is "Striving to Achieve Remarkable Success", and its main goal is to create employment and promote self reliance.

Other objectives are:

  1. To support poverty alleviation efforts.
  2. To stimulate economic activity and to create employment.
  3. To promote self reliance.
  4. To pool community resources for the production of goods and services.
  5. To encourage local investment.
  6. To encourage healthy eating habits.
  7. To contribute to the reduction in the island’s food import bill and ensure food security.

Organization’s Mission:
The production of top quality agricultural products, grown cooperatively in environmentally friendly conditions, all in an effort to preserve the health and well being of our people.

Presently the Co-operative is involved in Poultry Farming. Eggs are marketed in the community and in neighbouring villages from Good Hope to the Kalinago Territory. Manure from the farm is sold to Fair Trade which is used for composting. Very soon the Co-operative will expand its operation by commencing an organic vegetable project.

There 21 members, 45% of whom are women. The co-operative has created employment for three persons who work on a part time basis.

Generally, members assist in the feeding, marketing and up keep of the poultry farm.

Like all other Co-operatives, S.T.A.R.S Co-operative is governed by a Board of Directors. These seven persons form the executive body:

There are ongoing efforts to increase membership. To become a member one needs to pay $20.00 registration fee and purchase at least one share. Each share cost of $100.00. Each member is expected to purchase a minimum of 5 shares.

Co-operatives forms part of the community development process which enables people to become:

  • Self sufficient
  • and to exercise control over the environment
