International Cooperative Day 2021

International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) - 91st ICA International Co-operative Day - 19th UN International Day of Co-operatives - 3rd July 2021

On Saturday, July 3, 2021, International Day of Cooperatives was celebrated around the world under the theme, "Rebuild better together." Observed globally since 1923, International Day of Cooperatives works to raise awareness of cooperatives and celebrate their contributions to a more inclusive economy and society. This year, it's an opportunity for cooperatives everywhere to lift up how they're meeting the COVID-19 crisis with solidarity and resilience and offering communities a people-centred and environmentally just recovery. The Cooperative Movement of Dominica has been observing a week of activities in observance of the day.

THE AIM AND OBJECTIVE

International Day of Cooperatives aims to increase awareness of cooperatives, highlight the complementarities of the goals and objectives of the United Nations and the international Co-operative movement and underscore the contribution of the movement to the resolution of the major problems addressed by the United Nations. The International Day also aims to strengthen and extend partnerships between the international cooperative movement and other actors, including governments, at local, national and internal levels.

 

 

HOW TO CELEBRATE:

Co-operatives around the world celebrate the Day in many different ways. Below are examples of some of the activities organised by co-operatives around the world:

  • The messages of the ICA and United Nations are translated into local languages and widely disseminated to co-operators, media, and government officials at all levels.
  • Co-operatives use the media to create awareness on their movements and contributions.
  • Co-operative Fairs, exhibits, contests, and campaigns are held.
  • Meetings with government officials, United Nations agencies and other partner organisations are held.
  • Co-operatives partner with community agencies to champion economic, environmental, social and health challenges.
  • Cultural events are sponsored - theatre, concerts, etc.
